Reading with the Rhinos

Morley Newlands Primary School

Morley Newlands Primary School discover new ways of promoting reading to children with help from Leeds Rhinos players.

Primary School Children from Morley Newlands explored an innovative way in encouraging others to read by using Leeds Rhinos players as a way in promoting reading in schools and to other children. Children who read for enjoyment every day not only perform better in reading tests than those who don’t, but also develop a broader vocabulary, increased general knowledge and a better understanding of other cultures.

Janet Munro Year 4 Teacher at Morley Newlands Primary commented: ‘The idea was borne from a need to engage some of our boys in particularly with reading. As we are a big rugby school and many of our families support the Rhino's this seemed like a good idea and Reading with the Rhino's title was suggested.
The display has been a real talking point amongst the children and there have been comments such as 'Is Jamie Peacock really scared reading the Three Little Pigs?' We always take the opportunity to say that even professional sports people need to be good at reading and many of the Rhino's players have been to university.’
