Leeds Rhinos Foundation is delighted to announce that they will be hosting Coach Education Workshops for both Primary and Junior Rugby League coaches at Headingley Stadium this June.

On Monday 30th May, Leeds Rhinos Player Pathway Development Manager John Bastian will join Community Clubs Development Officer Sam Horner to help lead the first Coach Education Workshop for coaches working with the Under 12s-Under 16s age groups, focusing on a number of key areas including session structure for player development, decision making under pressure and coaching through small-sided games.

The session will be supported by Leeds Rhinos Pathway Coaches, who will hold an exclusive Q and A session for those coaches in attendance to share their expert insights, principles and knowledge on how to maximise the skills development of youth players and support their growth.

There is also a Primary Rugby League Workshop happening at Headingley Stadium on Thursday 9th June (6:30-8:30pm) for community coaches delivering to children aged 6-11, focusing on designing progressive Primary RL sessions which promote fun and enjoyment, skills and movement development.

It is suitable for anyone interested in coaching at Primary School Level (u7-u11) and aims to provide coaches with knowledge and understanding of the ethos, rationale and rules of Primary Rugby League while also upskilling coaches in their delivery through use of Primary Rugby League resource cards.

These new-look workshops will be delivered at the home of the Rhinos as part of the charity’s Coach Education programme, which is now into it’s ninth year as part of the charity’s Rugby League Development plan with Mears Group.

The RLDP plan, which was created in 2013, was designed to improve standards in all aspects of the game, with the Coach Education programme developed to improve the teaching and coaching of all players in the city through the upskilling of community and junior rugby league coaches.

Last year, Leeds Rhinos Foundation helped to upskill and train more than 170 new community coaches by delivering an extensive programme of Coach Education programmes, including ringfencing a number of Level 1 & 2 Coaching courses for coaches from it’s Ambassador Clubs.

Sam Horner, Community Clubs Development Officer, said: “We’ve been lucky with the amount of coaches that want to be involved in these courses and the help from Leeds Rhinos players and coaches who have supported the initiative over the last nine years.

“We’ve had hundreds of community coaches attend our sessions over the years and we’ve had great feedback about how the sessions help the coaches back at their clubs.  It’s a great example of the whole game working together for the good of the game.  Although the sessions are led by the Rhinos coaches, it is also a chance for all community coaches to share ideas with one another.

“The sessions have great interaction and are a great resource for the community game, so we hope many coaches will turn up and take advantage of these new workshops.”
