Great Example of Girls Rugby played by Year 7s in Leeds.

Corpus Christi Winners Year 7s with their teacher Mr Endersby

Last Thursday saw the return of the Girls Champion School qualifiers where the winners and runners up move forward into the next stage of this national competition.

The first match involved Mount St Marys vs Carr Manor, the game got under way with some great running from Mount St Marys and some brilliant goal kicking from Ruth Likara to add the extras. Carr Manor did very well to hold on in the tackles and their defence was heroic but not quite strong enough to hold St Marys out.

The decider match as to who would come top and qualify was between St Marys and Corpus Christi. The game kicked off with Corpus Christi scoring early and converting their try.

St Marys came back very strong and Corpus Christi had to defend their line for quite some time, however a turn over ball allowed Corpus Christi to put their strong runners into play and with a great overlap Corpus Christi used this to their strength with passing out wide and a great run down touch saw them score their second try. St Marys started to build the pressure again, and managed to get a score back. Unfortunately it was not enough before the final whistle went.

Corpus Christi won and qualify as winner and St Marys going through in second.

“It was a great evening with some fantastic rugby been played from all teams involved. I look forward to seeing the year 8s this Thursday battle it out to qualify.” said Sarah Clough, women’s and girl’s development officer at Leeds Rugby Foundation.
