Over the last fortnight, Leeds schools have been taking part in the Girls Champion Schools Yorkshire Cup.
The schools who took part performed best and qualified through the Leeds Champion Schools Competitions in October. Each school has been supported by coaching staff from Leeds Rhinos Foundation to help in the preparations for the tournament.
The schools who qualified and took part were:
Y7- Corpus Christi & Temple Moor
Y8- Temple Moor and Farnley Academy
Y9- Corpus Christi Catholic College and Farnley Academy
Y10- Temple Moor and Cockburn
Y11- Corpus Christi and Brigshaw
Speaking about the success of the girls’ teams, Leeds Rhinos Foundation’s Women and Girls Development Officer Lois Forsell said: “Well done to all the teams who took part in the tournament. I am really proud of all of the players who have worked hard in preparation for these games and certainly did their schools proud.
“This year we have had more girls accessing extra training at their local community clubs and this has been a huge benefit for them when they have returned to their club sides, as the performances in this tournament shows.”
Here is a round-up of the tournament
Year 7
Corpus Christi Catholic College played in a group of five and beat Outwood Academy, St John Fisher and Sirius and lost marginally 0-6 against Malet Lambert. They qualified to the semi-final where they played Castleford Academy and were unfortunate to lose out 12-6.
Cockburn were also in a group of five and beat Leeds School Temple Moor, Sirius and Settle, losing out to Castleford Academy 0-14. They qualified to the semi-final where they lost against Malet Lambert 18-0.
Year 9
Corpus Christi Catholic College played in a group of five and beat St Mary’s, St John Fisher and Brooksbank and lost 6-14 against Outwood Academy. They qualified to the semi-final and were beaten narrowly by Castleford Academy 12 points to 6.
David Young Community Academy qualified to the Yorkshire Cup as a reserve for Leeds and did great to qualify to the semi-final. They were in a group of 5 and won two against Sirius and Settle and lost against Castleford Academy and Leeds representatives Farnley Academy. They were beaten in the semi-final by Outwood Academy 18 points to 10.
Year 10
Temple Moor played in a pool of five and beat King James, St Mary’s and Minsthorpe and lost out narrowly 6-12 against Castleford Academy. They qualified to the semi-final against St John Fishers and played outstanding with the game finishing 12-12 meaning golden point had to be played. St John fisher proved too strong however and scored first, meaning they progressed to the final ahead of Temple Moor.
