Yorkshire Schools Cup Final berths for Corpus and Brigshaw

Brigshaw High School

Brigshaw and Corpus Christi high schools will be represented in this year’s Yorkshire Schools Cup finals at the LD Nutrition Stadium on the 14th March as both schools look to build on their Leeds and Hunslet competition success in 2017

Brigshaw’s Year 11 side will be looking to reverse their fortunes of last year where they were beaten finalists in the Yorkshire Cup and continue a year which started with success in the Leeds and Hunslet school’s finals.

The team were convincing 34-0 winners in their clash with Corpus Christi at South Leeds Stadium in December and by qualifying for the semi-finals in the Yorkshire Cup are in the next round of the national Champion Schools competition run by the RFL.

Corpus Christi Year 8, who will also make an appearance in the Yorkshire Cup final in March have also tasted success this school year winning the Leeds and Hunslet final for the second year running.

The team were in imperious form in the final recording a 26-0 win over Brigshaw’s year 8 side and will be hoping to mount a strong challenge in the Yorkshire Cup final having only made the semi-final stage of the competition last year.

Both schools based in the East of the city have enjoyed a long-term relationship with Leeds Rhinos Foundation East Leeds Rugby League Development Officer and Featherstone Rovers player Ian Hardman, who supports the rugby league programmes at the schools with lunch time and after school clubs for all year groups.

Hardman, whose role with Leeds Rhinos’ official charity also includes working in Primary schools to help introduce year 1 and 2 children to Rugby League said that regular finals appearances for both schools is just reward.

“Leeds Rhinos Foundation would like to wish both teams the best of luck in the Finals, Corpus Christi and Brigshaw High devote a lot of time in developing rugby league in their schools and this is just reward for their hard work!”

Corpus Christi Head of Rugby Tom Wandless commented:

“This is an Excellent achievement for the school! The Year 8 Boys have been Brilliant this year, improving massively on last year when they were knocked out at the semi-final stage of the Yorkshire and National cups. We are really excited to see the boys represent corpus in the Final!”
