Ronnie the Rhino came down to support the Whinmoor community today as Cllr Peter Gruen officially opened the new kitchen, donated by Leeds Rugby Foundation partners Mears, at the Fieldhead Community Centre.

Fieldhead Community Centre is a fantastic resource for Whinmoor and Swarcliffe residents, proving a meeting space for local committees to improve the area and being the main club house for local rugby league heroes, the Whinmoor Warriors ARLFC.

As part of the celebration event, Ronnie and the Leeds Rugby Foundation helped local young people improve their rugby skills with a touch rugby session.

Councillor Peter Gruen, Deputy Leader of Council and Executive Member for Neighbourhoods, Planning and Support Services said: “This kitchen was donated and fitted by our housing repairs contractor, Mears.  We couldn’t be more pleased with the work they have done.  It has completed this important venue within the thriving Whinmoor and Swarcliffe community.”

Andy Wilson, Partnership Director Leeds of Mears said: “Mears are really proud to help one of our local communities in partnership with Leeds Housing.  It is important that we support community initiatives to help further develop young peoples’ skills in rugby.”

Leon Crick, Rugby League Development Manager at Leeds Rugby Foundation commented: “Leeds Rugby Foundation and Leeds Rhinos work with 26 community clubs in Leeds and are proud to support Mears renovation of Fieldhead Community Centre. Mears sponsor Leeds Rugby Foundation’s 3 year rugby league development plan for Leeds which aims to get more youngsters involved in sport from the youngest of ages. Therefore the work on this fantastic resource will hugely benefit local amateur side Whinmoor Warriors ARLFC and the local community.”
