McDermott gives Primary Rugby League the thumbs up

Brian McDermott has given his backing to the new Primary Rugby League initiative.

The Leeds Rhinos head coach was speaking at a recent pilot project launch at Headingley where the new concept was introduced to clubs in the city.

"This is really good, it’s been needed for a long, long time" said McDermott.

"Coaches and parents can make it for too intense for the kids to enjoy it and that can lead to them just walking away."

"If we’ve got an RFL scheme that sees things like small-sided games that’s just brilliant, it’s needed to happen for years."

The RFL initiative – which sees the different age groups play with reduced team numbers with no match officials or coaches on the field of play – has already been launched in Hull and Cumbria as the RFL works with Leeds Metropolitan University to implement a new playing structure with the aim of giving every child a fun and enjoyable experience of the game.

After listening to McDermott, Primary Rugby League Manager Martyn Rothwell, Dave Morley from Leeds Met and Leeds Rhinos star Jamie Jones-Buchanan the children, their parents and coaches – from Oulton Raiders, East Leeds and Milford Marlins – then took to the famous Headingley pitch for a taster session.

“The evening went really well and I’d like to thank Brian, Jamie, the Leeds Rugby Foundation and everyone from the community clubs for making it a success,” said Rothwell.
