Chev Walker to lead coach education workshop

Leeds Rhinos Foundation

On 22nd October Leeds Rhinos coach Chev Walker will run a coach education workshop for community coaches at Leeds Rugby Academy.

The Coach Education workshops are part of Leeds Rhinos Foundation’s Rugby League Development Plan, supported by MEARS, which aims to support the game at grassroots level through helping to increase participation and improve standards.

Coaches from the charity’s Ambassador clubs and schools are invited to the session which will cover strength and conditioning in relation to the health and athleticism of youths within the Leeds and district area.  The session will be supported Leeds Rhinos Academy’s Strength and Conditioning Coach, Prof. Kevin Till.
The former Rhinos and England international will lead the first session and believes the programme is important for the growth of the game in the city.

“It’s great to be able to support the community game in this way.  Coaches in schools and clubs do an outstanding job in nurturing and developing players and if we can help them in anyway through these workshops I think it is really important.

“The conditioning of players is key, especially those in the older age groups and open age so to have the expertise of Kevin Till is really valuable.”

The Coach Education programme aims to upskill Coaches from the community with regular coaching insight, resources and support using players and coaches from Leeds Rhinos to deliver workshops on different areas of the game.

Sam Horner, Community Clubs Development Officer, said: “We’ve been lucky with the amount of coaches that want to be involved in the course and the help from Leeds Rhinos players and coaches who have supported the initiative over the last five years.

“We had 304 coaches last year take part and we had great feedback about the sessions help the coaches back at their clubs.  It’s a great example of the whole game working together for the good of the game.  Although the sessions are led by the Rhinos coaches, it is also a chance for all community coaches to share ideas with one another.

“The sessions have great feedback and a great resource for the community game, so we hope many coaches will turn up and take advantage of this workshop.  We are excited that Chev Walker will be joining us for the first session along with Prof. Kevin Till.  Both have a great deal of experience and will be able to offer a lot to the workshop.”
