Rugby League Taster Session at Oulton Raiders

As part of the 3 Year Rugby League Development Plan the Leeds Rugby Foundation delivered another hugely successful multi-skills and Rugby League activity session to Key Stage 1 students within the Rothwell and Oulton area of Leeds.

The pupils who were aged between 5 and 7 years, participated in a 4 week schools coaching programme, and were then encouraged to attend a Rugby League taster session at Oulton Raiders Junior Rugby League club.

There were 74 children in total at the event, which was absolutely brilliant for the Oulton Raiders Juniors. However most pleasing was the fact that there were 39 new players at the session who were from the local primary schools and nearly all had never been to a Rugby League session before.

The children were involved in some fun activities, games and rugby skills which were organised by both the Leeds Rugby Foundation and Oulton Raiders ARLFC. All the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves and they got the opportunity to meet the Leeds Rhinos’ 1st team players Chris Clarkson and Paul McShane as well as Rhinos’ mascot 'Ronnie the Rhino' who also brought along the Super League trophy!

Leeds Rhinos Primary Schools Development Officer, Tony Aubrey commented, "this was an unbelievably successful event. To have 74 keen and enthusiastic children running around with a Rugby League ball, enjoying themselves with a smile on their face is not only superb for this club but also for our great game. It's a wonderful opportunity for these children to be playing at such a young age and who knows, we may have a future professional Rugby League player right here today!

I really hope the children will continue to attend these sessions regularly on a Monday evening 6-7pm. The facilities, the coaching and the people involved with the Oulton Raiders club really make it a fantastic environment for young children to come to, play rugby, have fun and meet new friends in a safe and fun environment. In Particular ‘Rocky Whitehead’ does a tremendous job with the young kids! He is very experienced, a great entertainer and a fantastic coach so it would be a shame if the youngsters miss out. Finally, I would like to thank the Oulton club for letting us use their facilities and their coaches for helping to make the event a success."

The finale to the six week primary schools programme comes to an end this week with each school receiving the very popular Leeds Rhinos 'Winning Team' assembly with another special guest appearance by 'Ronnie the Rhino'.
