Rugby League Development Plan Supporting Next Generation

Molly Hutchinson has benefitted from the work of Leeds Rhinos Foundation

This year marks the fifth year since the start of Leeds Rhinos Foundation’s ground-breaking ‘Rugby League Development Plan’.

The aim of the plan, which is supported by MEARS, was to increase participation and improve standards and over the last five years the charity has helped with the development of players, coaches and referees.
One success story is young official, Molly Hutchinson, who is climbing the ladder at the RFL, thanks to help from the charity.

Having previously played rugby for Oulton Raidettes, the 15-year-old made the change to refereeing after attending Leeds Rhinos Foundation’s ‘Ref with the Rhinos’ workshops.
Since being directed to the RFL for official training after the course, she has volunteered at a variety of the charity’s events, including Rhinos Challenge, indoor touch rugby and half time matches to gain further experience.

Her achievements this season, alongside her weekly officiation of National Conference League and junior rugby matches across Yorkshire, include stepping up to be fourth official for the Rhinos’ Qualifiers’ clash against Salford Red Devils.

Sam Horner, Leeds Rhinos Foundation community clubs development officer, said: “Molly has worked really closely with us over the years, whether it’s been attending one of our programmes or refereeing at our events.  We are proud to have helped her achieve.

“She’s worked really hard to get to this point. She was one of 30 successful referees we helped at the referee workshops and we have continued to support her since by inviting her to officiate at our events.

“To be selected as fourth official by the RFL shows the journey she’s been on and the success that can be achieved with hard work.”
