Leeds Rugby Foundation supported the Leeds Schools’ Sport Partnership West Qualifying Tournament at Stanningley ARLFC on Friday afternoon which saw 19 Primary Schools take part in a Rugby League World Cup themed tag rugby festival.
The winners of the event were to progress to the Leeds School’s Games Final in May at the John Charles Centre for Sport.
A total of 21 teams took part in the fun-filled festival and after some great skills were shown throughout, Holy Family Catholic Primary School were crowned the winners. They narrowly defeated Lower Wortley in the final and both Summerfield and Whitecote Primary School finished in joint third place.
Leeds Rugby Foundation’s Rugby League Development Manager, Leon Crick said:
“It was great to see so many schools coming together and Friday’s event is yet another example that Rugby League is flourishing in the city.”
Charlie Pyatt, Leeds West Partnership Manager commented: "Rugby League World Cup has got off to a great start in West Leeds as a result of the partnership work between; the new Leeds PE and School Sport Offer (which Leeds SSP West is part of), Leeds Rugby Foundation and Stanningley RL Club. It has provided an exciting event for well over 200 young people. I am sure the event will have inspired the participants to be enthusiastic about the Rugby League World Cup tournament and to become involved in further school sport oportunities. I would like to thank the primary schools, Leeds Rugby Foundation and Stanningley RL for making the event such a success."
Bramley Primary School were one of the schools who took part in the Festival and Headteacher, Mr David Harrison commented on the day:
"It was a fantastic day. Most of the kids who have played in this festival don’t play for a local club and Friday’s event gave them the opportunity to get excited, get involved and score tries!
“It was great to get everyone together from all over the West Leeds area and the Festival was played in great spirit with Leeds Rugby Foundation staff a real help and inspiration to the kids."
