Leeds Rugby Foundation support Student Rugby League Yorkshire Colleges 9s

York College carried off the annual Student Rugby League Yorkshire Colleges 9s defying torrential rain to win in style against Calderdale B. The event held this year in partnership between SRL, Milford Marlins and Leeds Rugby Foundation, took place at the prestigious Abbey Fields in Kirkstall and saw eleven teams in action across three groups.

Despite the biblical style downpour there was a jovial atmosphere all afternoon with coaches and players alike all able to see the funny side of the weather which led to some truly amazing handling skills on show.

Helped by coaches of the calibre of Co-operative Championship players Chris Thorman, Lee Greenwood and Ben Black the skills on show bode well for the coming season which kicks off later this month.  Special mention should also go to New College Pontefract and Leeds City College who entered five teams very competitive sidesbetween them as they look to build on last season’s achievements.

“The event was fun and there was plenty of laughter, especially when some players took to seeing who could slide furthest in a Klinsmann-style dive!” said SRL Development Officer, Jim Shuttleworth.

“We have to thank the Leeds Rugby Foundation and Milford though as the condition of the pitches was exceptional and really helped promote great attacking Rugby League.”

Jonny Wainhouse, Leeds Rugby Foundation Development Officer,  “ As a Foundation we are always keen to support the development of rugby league within Leeds and across Yorkshire, hence our involvement in this annual event.”
