Rhinos Rugby League taster sessions to support community clubs and get more children playing the game

Leeds Rhinos Foundation are pleased to announce that they will be providing support for their Ambassador community clubs by hosting a series of Rugby League Taster Sessions with their junior teams throughout 2022.

Last year the Foundation delivered a total of 25 taster session across Leeds through the RFL’s Sky Try programme, leading to more than 350 new players registering their interest in joining the host club.

In addition, there were also 12 specific Girls Rugby League taster sessions which gave 60 new players the chance to experience playing outside their school and become part of a team at a local community club.

Sadly the Sky Try funding has come to an end this year, but having helped more than 700,000 children across the country to enjoy the sport of rugby league for the first time over the past 7 years, Leeds Rhinos Foundation realise the importance of carrying on this scheme in a new guise and continuing to provide support for the community clubs with recruiting new players for their youngest age groups.

The new programme of ‘Rhinos taster sessions’ will become established as a focal point of the Foundation’s Rugby League Development Plan with Mears Group, which aims to improve standards increase participation in the sport by providing more playing opportunities and access to quality coaching.

These free taster sessions are open to all boys and girls in school years 1, 2 or 3 and offer a fantastic opportunity for children who want to try rugby league for the first time to make a gentle introduction to playing by teaching them the basics through fun games and activities.

There will also be separate Girls Rugby tasters taking place with any Ambassador clubs who have a separate Women and Girls section and are looking to recruit new starters for their Under 11s/12s sides.

It all gets underway next week, with two planned taster sessions taking place at East Leeds ARLFC for their Under 7s and Girls Under 11s sides (please see list below for further details.)

With grassroots sport back up and running again and the 2022 Yorkshire Junior season on the horizon, this is the perfect time to get your child into playing our great game at one of our brilliant local clubs. All sessions will be COVID-secure and follow the current RFL ‘Return to Play’ guidelines, in line with the latest Government guidance.

All of these taster sessions will be FREE to attend and no experience is neccessary!
