Opportunities for women and girls to get involved in Rugby League has never been better with more Leeds clubs now running girls teams, extra coaching in schools and the newly formed Leeds Rhinos Women’s team giving female players in the city the chance to play for their home town club in Super League for the first time.
Through Leeds Rhinos Foundation’s Rugby League Development Plan, supported by Mears, the charity is dedicated to creating more opportunities for girls to get playing and to support the development of players.
Last year our Women and Girls Development Officer, Lois Forsell, coached 1,656 girls in Leeds secondary schools and also offered support to local community clubs with taster sessions to encourage more females to join their local club. The charity is also helping more women's coaches get their level one qualifications and they are offered additional support through the Coach Education programme.
Forsell, who this week was named the first captain of the Leeds Rhinos Women’s team said this is a great time to be involved in the Women’s game.
“With the formation of the Leeds Rhinos Women’s team this is a really exciting time to be part of women’s Rugby League. As a charity we have worked with young female players in schools and clubs for over a decade and now there is a clear pathway for them to progress and a Super League team for them to aspire to play for.
“We have some great community clubs in Leeds who run women’s and girls teams and I would recommend for anyone thinking of trying out Rugby League to go along to their local club and give it a go. Many of the players who have signed for the Rhinos Women’s team have played for Leeds clubs and we have former Oulton, Stanningley, East Leeds, Farnley and West Leeds players in the squad.
“I have been playing Rugby League since I was 7-years-old and I still love playing now. It’s a great team sport and I have made many friends through the game and now I have been given the opportunity to captain my home town club which is a dream come true.”
