Over the past 12 weeks, the Community Payback Scheme has provided vital support to several community clubs through a range of environmental projects.
These efforts include clearing and cleaning spaces, planting bulbs, decorating and tackling many other tasks that often struggle for volunteers within communities.
One of the beneficiaries of this initiative was West Leeds ARLFC, who received help with painting, moving materials and grass cutting at the club’s brand-new clubhouse. The support has been instrumental in helping the club maintain its facilities and create a welcoming space for its players and visitors.
Run by the Probation Service, the Community Payback Scheme has a longstanding history of working with organisations to provide meaningful opportunities for ex-offenders. This programme aims to help participants contribute positively to their local communities throughout the city.
Rugby League Development Officer, Sam Horner, commented on the initiative: “This scheme is a brilliant example of how clubs can gain essential support while offering individuals a chance to give back. It’s not just about the work being done – it’s about creating community spirit and showing that people can turn their lives around and make a real difference.”
The success of the pilot project has encouraged the Leeds Rhinos Foundation to extend the scheme to all community Rugby League clubs in Leeds as part of our Community Club Support Scheme. This expansion underscores the foundation’s commitment to both supporting local clubs and contributing to our broader goal of changing lives through the power of sport.
