Brigshaw capture trophy treble in Leeds & Hunslet Schools Cup Finals

Brigshaw High School added to their Leeds and Hunslet Schools trophy collection last week securing a famous treble for 2022 with victories in the Year 7 and Year 11 competitions after securing the Year 8 title of the first of two showpiece Finals evenings.

There was further history made at the South Leeds Stadium this week as Allerton Grange School won their first ever prize for Rugby League in the Leeds & Hunslet Schools competitions, defeating Crawshaw Academy 18-14 in a thrilling Year 9 Final for the Lee Trophy.

But the night belonged to Brigshaw again, who rounded off an incredible year for the school’s Rugby League department by winning the Year 7 Gilston Cup with a hard-fought 16-12 victory over Cockburn, before thumping Leeds West Academy 38-6 in the Year 11 Wilson Cup Final to wrap up their first ever treble haul in the Finals.

A week earlier, Brigshaw had wrapped up their first silverware of the week as they dismantled Farnley Academy 38-6 in the Year 8 Goldthorpe Cup Final thanks to a four-try performance from Kane McNamara.

That was followed by one of the greatest finals in the illustrious 110 year history of the Leeds & Hunslet Schools competitions, with Temple Moor Learning Academy going toe to toe with Farnley Academy for the Year 10 Harrison Shield.

With Farnley Academy looking certain to have secured victory through a late Freddie Butler try, Temple Moor made their final possession count as Man of the Match Callum Webster burst through the defence and ran 60 metres on the hooter to steal the win and cause great scenes both on the field and in the stands amongst the watching parents.

It was Webster’s third try of the evening, and his solo performance was deserving of the 14-12 victory that saw them take home the Harrison Shield for the first time.

Players were once again rewarded for their efforts in another fantastic year of cup finals with guest appearance from several Leeds Rhinos first team players including Rhyse Martin, Brad Dwyer, Liam Sutcliffe and Jack Sinfield, who handed out the medals and trophies to the teams and Man of the Match winners.

The Finals were once again a huge success, with Leeds Rhinos Foundation helping to put on a great event befitting of these historic honours which were well attended and complimented by all the Schools who took part.
