Youngsters enjoy Headingley experience at Rhinos 9s Finals Night

The curtain was brought down on another fantastic year of High School Rugby League on Thursday when Leeds Rhinos Foundation hosted the Rhinos 9s Finals at the world famous Headingley Stadium.

It gave more than 100 pupils from across the city a chance to represent their school at one of the finest Rugby League stadiums in the country, with friends and family in the stands to cheer them on.

First up was the Year 7 Final, which set the tone for a fantastic evening of Nines Rugby as both Cockburn School and Allerton Grange gave a great account themselves in a hard-fought showdown. After levelling the scores at 3-3 inside the final minute of the match, Cockburn then broke clear in Golden Point and secured a superb come-from-behind victory with a try from Gil Yeboah.

In the Year 8 Final, heavyweights Brigshaw High School were unable to add to their success in the Leeds & Hunslet Schools Cup Finals earlier this year as Leeds West Academy dominated proceedings to claim a huge 7-4 win.

And in the evening’s last piece of action, Allerton Grange made up for their disappointment in the Year 7 Final by thumping Brigshaw 8-0 with what was undoubtedly the performance of the night to lift the Year 9 trophy and round off another strong Rhinos 9s competition.

Following their games, the young players were invited up to receive their medals from Leeds Rhinos first team stars Matt Prior and Zane Tetevano, who came along to cast their eye over proceedings and show their support for the Schools Rugby League game.
