Two local boys, Henry and Rafe, both aged 10, are gearing up for a monumental challenge this May in support of Leeds Rhinos Foundation.
Joined by their dads, the boys will tackle the Welsh 3000s Challenge — a demanding trek across 15 peaks in Snowdonia National Park, covering nearly 30 miles over two days on the 24th and 25th of May.
The challenge, which spans three rugged mountain ranges, includes iconic summits like Snowdon, Crib Goch, and Tryfan.
Motivated by their joint love for sport and a recent school visit from Rhinos legend, Jamie Jones-Buchanan, highlighting the impact of the Leeds Rhinos Foundation, Henry and Rafe were inspired to take on a challenge that would stretch them both physically and mentally.
Friends since before starting school together, the pair bonded through sports and share an appreciation for the opportunities they’ve had both in and out of school – something they know many others may not have access to.
Through their fundraising, they hope to give back by supporting the Foundation’s vital work. Leeds Rhinos Foundation operates at the heart of communities, using the power of sport to create positive change – from tackling social inequality and isolation to promoting inclusion and raising aspirations for people of all ages and backgrounds.
Henry’s dad, Guy, explained why the boys have decided to take on this challenge, and why they have chosen Leeds Rhinos Foundation to benefit from their efforts: “When Henry decided he wanted a real challenge for his 10th birthday, Rafe didn’t hesitate to join him. Together, they chose one of the UK’s toughest hikes — the Welsh 3000s — to push themselves physically and mentally. It’s a route that tests even experienced adult climbers, but these two 10-year-olds are taking it on to inspire others and raise funds for Leeds Rhinos Foundation.
“Their love of sport and friendship, forged since they met at a swimming lesson aged three, is what drives them.
“Despite a recent hospital stay after a cross-country injury, Henry’s determination hasn’t wavered and he is already planning a training trip to Snowdonia in a couple of weeks to test out parts of the route.
“They have seen the power of sport in bringing people together, teaching important life skills and having lots of fun – and want to ensure that as many children as possible get those opportunities.”
Leeds Rhinos Foundation CEO, Bob Bowman, expressed his gratitude: “One of the greatest pleasures in leading the Leeds Rhinos Foundation is witnessing people who go out of their way to take on events that raise vital funds so that we can deliver even more opportunities to Change Lives Through the Power of Sport.
“Cake bakes and sales, runs of all descriptions and sleeping out are such examples and I thank everyone who continues to support us.
“Then I come across the story of Henry and Rafe and the epic hiking challenge they are taking on in May, proving to me that society’s future is safe and positive as these young boys are doing something truly amazing at such a young age!
“The Leeds Rhinos Foundation is 20 years old this year and we are very much wanting to celebrate our past, present and future. Henry and Rafe, with their desire to do good and help us out, is a fantastic story in this very important year for us.
“Thank you both, good luck with the challenge, and I look forward to welcoming you both, and your families, to a Rhinos match to hear all the details and check out the blisters!”
Head of Corporate Social Responsibility at Caddick, Kairen Brown, added: “We’re incredibly proud to support Henry and Rafe in their inspiring challenge for Leeds Rhinos Foundation. Their determination and teamwork for giving back at such a young age is nothing short of remarkable.
“To show our support, Caddick are delighted to be match funding up to £1,000 of the total funds they raise. We’re behind them every step of the way and look forward to seeing them take on this epic challenge in supporting the Foundation’s work in communities across Leeds.”
