The latest Primary school tag tournament run by the Leeds Rugby Foundation – the Priesthorpe Primary School Festival – has been hailed as a success on a number of levels.
The event, featuring 11 schools in the west of the city, took place at the West Leeds community rugby league club in Armley and showcased over 100 children from Bramley, Armley, Farsley, Stanningley, Pudsey and Farnley.
As well as a high skill level on display, links were fostered between the up and coming young stars and their local club which hosts two such events a year.
Leeds Rugby Foundation supports such festivals with the provision of staff and equipment. This year extra backing came from Leeds City College who provided 15 volunteers for refereeing, coordinating the teams and taking scores.
Their students have signed up for an NVQ level 2 and RFL level 2 qualification and part of their course content is to run a Rugby Festival.
The feedback from the teachers has been excellent and Sam Horner, the course tutor and Leeds Rugby Foundation Community Development Officer, added “The attendees from the course were a credit to the Leeds Rhinos, Leeds City College and themselves.”
An extra treat for everyone, especially the children, was having Ronnie Rhino was in attendance and the Super League Trophy.
The winner was St Bartholomew's Primary School in Armley
