Under 11’s Culley Sevens a great success

Leeds Rugby Foundation continued their great work in the community as they hosted the Leeds and Hunslet Schools Rugby League Under 11’s Culley Sevens Festival at Stanningley ARLFC yesterday.

The annual festival is in name of John Culley who was a life-long and supporter of Hunslet Rugby League Club. John passed away at the age of 95 back in 1975. Yorkshire Evening Post colunist John Morgan donated a trophy in his honour; it is this trophy which the schools compete for each year.

A big thanks must go to all players and coaches from the following competing Schools:

  • Gledhow
  • Adel
  • Farsley Springbank
  • All Saints
  • Kerr Mackie
  • Alwoodley
  • Holy Family
  • Shire Oak
  • Hunslet Carr
  • Beecroft
  • Castleton
  • Bramley
  • Hunslet St Michaels
  • Queensway
  • Immac Heart
  • Bramley St Peters
  • Whingate
  • Rothwell St Mary’s
  • Lower Wortley
  • Bramhope
  • Churwell
  • St Augustine’s
  • West End

After a hard fought yet enjoyable festival the final was contested between Hunslet St Mary’s and St Augustine’s with the latter coming out victorious. Rhinos star Ian Kirke was also on hand to present the trophy.

Madeleine Hegarty, Leeds and Hunslet School’s Rugby League Primary Schools’ co-ordinator commented:

“Yet again this was a hugely successful event. The weather took a turn for the worse, but credit to all the players and coaches who battled on through. The standard this year was fantastic and fun was had by all which is of course the reason we run these festivals. Congratulations to St Augustine’s Primary School who lifted the John Culley trophy.”
