Three of the best for Rhinos Development Academy with victory over Huddersfield Giants

Leeds Rhinos Development Academy extended their winning run to three games with a convincing 34-6 victory over Huddersfield Giants Development Academy on Wednesday at the Queensway Club.

A Dylan Wepener brace inspired Dan Hardy’s side, run in partnership with Leeds City College, to their third straight success as they continue to rise up the Colleges Premier Division table following a difficult start to the campaign.

The result never looked in doubt for the Rhinos, who made the visitors pay with some slick, attacking rugby that proved too difficult to stop. An early score from Rob Davidson, making the most of some uncertainty in the Giants ranks following a kick into the in-goal area from Dylan Price, saw the Rhinos grab an early 6-0 advantage.

In the following set, they almost crossed again. Price once again placed a beautifully weighted kick into the danger zone which was scooped up by Wepener, but the winger was unable to ground cleanly under pressure from the recovering Giants defence.

The home side did extend their lead before the break, as just seconds before the whistle sounded Mehki Bridgeman-Rainey jumped out of dummy half and powered between two defenders to score. With two conversions added by Price, the Rhinos youngsters led 12-0 at the break.

It was more of the same after the interval, with quick scores from Sam Avison and Wepener extending the Rhinos’ advantage to 24-0. A brief reply from the Giants, who notched their first points of the game, failed to make an impression as Leeds hit back once more through Wepener, who showed great poise to beat who opposite number and dive over in the corner.

A final score from Jack Flanagan- with Price converting- saw the final score look even more convincing at 34-6, reflecting the Rhinos’ total dominance over their West Yorkshire counterparts.

Victory moves the side up to joint third in the Colleges Premier Division table, with six points from six matches played and a tricky visit to Wakefield College- who sit one place above the Rhinos through a superior points difference- coming up next Wednesday, 11th December.
