Squads named for North v South U16 game at Headingley

On Sunday afternoon, Headingley will host the last North v South game of the season as part of a double header with the Betfred Super League Women’s game between Leeds and York.

The North v South Player Development Series returned this summer for the first time in eight years.  Sunday’s Origin game will involve sides consisting of players from either North or South of the River Aire, who will reignite an age old rivalry in the city.

The series is for players not connected to a professional club scholarship or academy who are looking to take their next steps towards furthering their Rugby League careers.

The players involved have been working with community coaches on a six-week player development programme, where they have been able to continue their development and express their skills in a competitive and challenging player environment.  They then may be offered further pathway opportunities in the Leeds Rhinos Academy and the Leeds Rhinos Development Academy, run in conjunction with Leeds City College.

Local community coaches are also given the chance to improve their coaching practices and gain wider experience working in a player development environment.

It is the first time that a ‘North vs South’ fixture has taken place in the city since 2014, when players such as Jack Broadbent and Muizz Mustapha played in the fixtures.
