Schools go for glory in Leeds & Hunslet Schools Cup Finals

The best high school rugby league teams in Leeds will battle it out over the next two weeks in the Leeds & Hunslet Schools Cup Finals at John Charles Centre for Sport.

The showpiece finals will round off another fantastic year of schools rugby league in the city, and will provide a fitting platform for the young stars to showcase their talents and lift the famous trophies.

On Wednesday 29th January, the Year 8 final sees Farnley Academy and Lawnswood School do battle for the Goldthorpe Cup, before Garforth Academy and Corpus Christi Catholic High School go head to head for the Year 10 Wilson Cup.

Then a week later, Brighsaw High School will be hoping to complete a famous treble when their teams compete in the Year 7 (vs Crawshaw Academy), Year 9 (vs Corpus Christi Catholic High School) and Year 11 (vs Crawshaw Academy) finals on Wednesday 5th February.

With the five finals taking place over two different evenings, there will be plenty of action for people to enjoy, with Leeds Rhinos Foundation once again supporting the running of both events.

Steve Boothroyd, Secretary for Leeds & Hunslet Schools’ Rugby League, commented, “High School Rugby League in Leeds has a long and proud history, competitions having been played for almost 120 years. The Goldthorpe Cup was first presented in 1904 and is thought to be the oldest trophy, still being competed for, in the school game.

“Whilst growth in the regional and national champion schools tournament has led to the disappearance of leagues; schools now contest cup and plate competitions, which we are extremely proud to run.

“I would like to thank Ian Hardman for his hard work in the organisation of this season’s competitions, particularly today’s finals, and thank the rest of the Leeds Rhinos Foundation team for their support and enthusiasm throughout the season.”

Entry to both finals evenings is free of charge with free parking available at the stadium. Match updates will be available on Leeds Rhinos Foundation’s Twitter (@RugbyLeeds).
