Through a partnership with Active Schools Leeds, Leeds Rhinos Foundation have enjoyed a successful start to the academic year with schools in the 2gether cluster who have all benefited from tailored PE and dance delivery from Active Schools Locality Coordinator Ms Schofield since September.
Five schools from the cluster have now committed their government sport premium funds to have Leeds Rhinos Foundation provide a dedicated locality coordinator in their school, where they receive at least 70 hours of provision throughout the school year.
Leeds Rhinos Foundation Community Manager Gareth Cook said:
“The partnership with the 2gether cluster has already proven to be really benefitting the schools involved who through regular contact with myself and Alishia have sampled two terms of high quality PE provision tailored to their school’s needs.
“Our goal is to see more schools from the cluster also benefit from this offer going forward which then increases the collaboration and experiences pupils can take part in through curriculum delivery and through combined sports events and tournaments throughout the year.”
Leeds Rhinos Foundation are now working with over 100 primary schools across the city through the school cluster model which sees Active Schools Locality Coordinators who all have UKCC Level 2 coaching badges and are multi-sport and multi-skills trained, service up to 10 schools in their different areas.
Head Teacher at Harehills Primary School Joanne Summerfield said the partnership with Leeds Rhinos Foundation provides sustainability for the schools PE provision going forward:
“We are using money from our PE and sports premium which we have to be accountable to the government for and part of that element is not only increasing physical activity for children but also looking at sustainability so when Alishia is delivering her sessions in school our teachers and support staff are involved, so we would hope that that is aiding their professional development in areas that they are maybe not as confident in teaching and delivering.”
Alongside curriculum teaching, Alishia also plays a role in providing extra-curricular opportunities throughout the school year where schools including Brackenedge, Chapel Allerton, Harehills, Hovingham, St Matthews, Carr Manor and Milfield Primary are all invited to take part.
“One of the key things we wanted as a cluster were the six events during the year that we would be invited to and could participate in, which from a child’s perspective that means that children are having that opportunity to see, participate and perhaps compete in a variety of sports, added Summerfield.”
