Leeds Rhinos legend Rob Burrow joined Leeds Rhinos Foundation for a special workshop on ‘Coaching back plays and kicking technique’ with over 60 community coaches as part of the charity’s Coach Education programme.
Now in its 6th year, Coach Education, which is part of the charity's Rugby League Development plan sponsored by Mears, provides community coaches with current and professional coaching information, techniques and opportunities to see members of the Rhinos playing and coaching staff deliver example coaching sessions.
Headed up by Rhinos Assistant Coach Barry Eaton, the programme delivered year round at Leeds Rugby Academy, caters for coaches working with all age groups and abilities, from juniors, open age, right through to the elite level using the Rhinos scholarship to run through the drills on the night.
Burrow, who has won every major honour with the club, joined Barry Eaton for the second workshop of the season following on from team mate Adam Cuthbertson, who delivered to a further 40 coaches from the community in December.
The Featherstone Juniors product commented on the importance of programmes like Coach Education:
“I think it’s just important that the stuff we learn at the professional level is filtered down to the amateur clubs and the community coaches, a lot of things are done at the amateur level without really knowing why you are doing them but the education that Barry Eaton is giving them here is exactly what we get as players and that can only benefit the next crop of players coming through.
“I wish I had this sort of knowledge from my coaches growing up because you don’t what you could do if you knew it.”
Community Clubs Development Officer for the Foundation Sam Horner commented:
“There is a full programme for 2017 all for community coaches that are coaching different age groups and all for impact on the community game and upskilling players. So the coaches take that knowledge back to their clubs and upskill players based on their findings here.”
“We will be covering a range of areas throughout the year and have been lucky to secure support from different personnel from the Rhinos coaching department to deliver workshops in 2017.
“As always we will try and provide insights into different areas of coaching including more workshops on strength and conditioning, nutrition, coaching primary rugby and also putting together some coaching resources to coaches attending which will help reinforce everything we are covering.”
