Leeds Rhinos Foundation kicked off another year of the Coach Education Programme with a special position and game specific workshop led by Leeds Rhinos Assistant Coach Barry Eaton on 30th March attended by over 35 coaches from the community game.
Barry Eaton, who will be taking a lead on the Coach Education programme this year, delivered the workshop with a focus on position and game specific coaching, while giving an insight in to coaching players who are making the transition to the full 13 a' side game.
Coaches were provided with a coaching resource on the night to better understand the objectives and delivery, which they could also take away and discuss the afterwards with other coaches and their players at their clubs.
The delivery also included a discussion from Eaton about the roles and skill set of each position, emphasising the importance of not labelling young players into positions but to let all players practice situations in all areas.
To demonstrate scenarios and drills on the night, East Leeds Under 11s volunteered their time to come along receive example coaching from Leeds Rhinos Foundation Rugby League Development Officers Richard Tate and Matthew Nicholson.
Barry Eaton along with Leon Crick and Sam Horner from the Leeds Rhinos Foundation then spoke to the coaches about the delivery objectives and took questions from the coaches about the drills and games being delivered.
As always with the coaching of junior rugby, the drills and games were delivered with a constant emphasis on fun and enjoyment with all team positions covered and regular rotations for the players.
The workshop then finished with a Q & A with the coaching team and Barry, who irradiated the coaching content delivered on the night, applauding the young players involvement and thanking all for attending.
Leeds Rhinos Foundation Community Clubs Development Officer, Sam Horner commented:
"This event shows the interest of the coaches and dedication across our community game of coaches wanting to be up-skilled with so many coming down tonight. The coaches came up with some good questions on seeing the advantage of smaller sided games and drills that keep players more involved and learning more each session.
"The content and other resources are all part of our support and many other events will take place throughout the year."
Barry Eaton also gave out his email address to coaches attending on the night and told coaches to email him for advise and support at Barry.Eaton@leedsrugby.com
The next Coach Education workshop on Nutrition for Rugby Players will take place on 25th April at TryZone from 6:30pm.
