PDRL Coach elected as Mayor of Morley

Earlier this month, PDRL Coach, Simon Brown, was elected as the new Mayor of Morley, crediting both the Foundation and Blind Veterans UK in helping him get to this point.

After four years of volunteering for the Morley Town Council, Simon will now serve as Mayor and Leeds City Councillor for Morley North, representing the Morley Borough Independents. In taking on this role, Simon will be the first ever visibly disabled Mayor of Morley.

As the new Mayor, Simon aims to represent his community and raise awareness of our Foundation and Blind Veterans UK, who have supported him since his return from the Armed Forces.

Simon has had a successful playing career with the Leeds Rhinos Physical Disability Rugby League team and has recently transitioned to coaching, leading both the Senior and Junior sections.

He is also a great ambassador for other projects run by our charity, including the Offload Mental Health Programme and the new Rhinos Brew Veterans Café, which encourages education, wellbeing and social engagement for Armed Forces Veterans.

Commenting on the support he has received from the Foundation, Simon said: “The Rhinos family has supported me since I returned home and had to adapt to my new reality. That alone is enough for me to support them.

“However, the Leeds Rhinos Foundation’s impact on various aspects of life has transformed so many people’s lives, including my own.

“I am proud to support and contribute to their projects, and in doing so, I aim to champion the people who work in the community.”

Simon aims to leverage his new public profile to raise funds for our Foundation, supporting our mission to change lives through the power of sport.
