New Rhinos Active Social in Harehills this Friday

Leeds Rhinos Foundation are launching the third Rhinos Active Social group to run in Leeds this Friday with a new venue at St Cyprian with St James Church Hall in Harehills.

Rhinos Active Social which is supported by Morrison’s Foundation, invites over 55s to take part in weekly activities to encourage physical activity led by a range of guest instructors, while also providing a friendly, casual atmosphere for group members to enjoy socialising with the refreshments on offer each week.

The free two-hour sessions provide a wide variety of activities including beginner's yoga, tai chi and chair-based exercise, dance based exercise along with taster ping pong and walking netball and rugby, all offered to encourage manageable light physical activity and peer interaction with people of a similar age.

Already running from the Cardigan Centre in Headingley on Tuesdays and OPAL Welcome In Community Centre in Tinshill on Wednesdays, the new venue will provide sessions on Fridays from 10-12am at the St Cyprian with St James Church Hall in Harehills.

The venue will open its doors for the first time to Rhinos Active Social this Friday, where guests will receive refreshments and a chance to meet other attendees along with an official welcome from Leeds Rhinos Foundation staff.

To introduce new guests to the programme, staff from Leeds Rhinos Foundation will also be running a taster activity on the day and an overview of some of the activities that will be on offer over the first weeks of the programme.

Health Improvement Officer for Leeds Rhinos Foundation Laura Buckle said:

“The aim of Rhinos Active Social is to engage the older community in activities to improve their physical health but we also know from feedback and research we’ve undertaken since the start of the programme that a regular social outlet is also really important for mental and social well-being, so we are delighted to launch our third venue where we can hopefully work with more people.

“As a non-profit organisation, everything we are able to run is through kind donations, sponsorship and support from local businesses and organisations, so we are thankful for the support from Morrison’s Foundation, who allow us to offer the programme free of charge.”

Rhinos Active Social is free to attend and suitable for anyone over the age of 55, for more information please contact Laura.Buckle@leedsrhinosfoundation.org or call 07710 094 019
