Four local Leeds schools who have made it through to the regional qualifying matches for the Championship Schools Rugby League competition will take part in the curtain raiser on Tuesday 2nd December at Headingley Carnegie Stadium ahead of the Rhinos Academy match against Australia Schools.
As part of an ongoing relationship with the Leeds Rhinos Foundation, year 7 teams from Woodkirk, Morley, Corpus Christi and Temple Moor will get a chance to play on the famous Headingley Carnegie pitch, with the games kicking off at 5:30pm.
Staff from the Foundation have worked with each of the schools this year and will support them further as they aim to reach the national final which will be played at Wembley Stadium before the Challenge Cup Final.
The Champion Schools tournament is the world's biggest Rugby League knockout competition and one of the greatest success stories for the sport. Open to every secondary school in England, Wales and Scotland, the tournament was re-launched back in 2002 by the RFL and the English Schools Rugby League.
Russell Parker, High School Development Officer, who has delivered the coaching programme in the schools competing said: “We invited the teams to play in the this curtain raiser and on the famous Headingley Carnegie pitch as a reward for all the young players who have worked so hard to make it through to the Regional stages of what is the RFL’s flagship Secondary Schools competition. They have all done their schools and the city proud and we wish them the best of luck in the next stage of the competition. We hope many of our fans can come along earlier to support them on this memorable night.”
The main event starting at 7pm will see Leeds Rhinos under-19 squad take on an overseas challenge in the form of Australia’s Secondary Schools team, in what promises to be an entertaining evening of Rugby League action at Headingley Carnegie Stadium.
So please come down and show your support to the local schools teams playing on Tuesday evening and our Rhinos Academy side, who face a tough pre-season test with all proceeds helping to fund the work of the Rhinos Foundation.
Entry to the game is £2 and will be donated to the Leeds Rhinos Foundation. You can enter the ground through Gates B and C or through the South Stand.
We look forward to seeing you on the day.
