The Leeds Rhinos Foundation and The Prince’s Trust are pleased to be delivering an opportunity for unemployed 16-25 year olds to receive an introduction into a career in sports coaching, with a Rugby League Leaders Award on 13th February 2017.
The Prince’s Trust Get Started programme is a personal and social development course using inspiring themes delivered in partnership with specialist organisations to engage young people who often lack the motivation and confidence needed to take their first step.
The five-day course, available free of charge with travel costs covered, will be led by staff from the Foundation and is aimed at young people needing help getting into work, education or training.
The course, held at Stanningley ARLFC, will benefit those interested in a career in the sports coaching industry or those looking to build up their CV with a recognised qualification in sport, but will also benefit young people wishing to generally build their confidence and other skills. No prior experience is needed for the course.
Course content includes team and confidence building exercises, workshops about 'Drugs in Sport', 'Careers in Sport' and 'Healthy Lifestyles' as well as how to deliver a touch rugby coaching session using a range of different skills.
The course is accessible to people of all fitness and ability, experience of playing rugby is not required as the course focusses on coaching. Skills learnt will be transferable to other sports and be of general benefit and the programme includes a special talk from a Leeds Rhinos star.
Attendees will then be assessed on the final day of the course by leading a tag rugby festival, which will be organised and managed by the young people themselves. Participants can also enjoy a celebration event on completion of the course, at Headingley Carnegie Stadium where they will receive their qualification from a special guest and can attend a stadium tour.
Benefits of the course include:
• Learn how to coach from professionals
• Work towards gaining a Rugby League Leaders Award (RLLA)
• Meet new people
• Build your confidence
• Make a difference to your local community
• Be supported for three months following the course
• Travel costs and lunch will be provided.
Young people who have undertaken this course in the past have gone on to take up new opportunities such as coaching local amateur rugby league clubs, and progression onto Level 2 Rugby League coaching certificates accredited by the RFL.
