Leeds Rhinos Foundation Launch Coaching Mentorship Programme

On Monday 12th January, Leeds Rhinos Foundation launched the Coaching Mentorship Programme, an exciting new initiative designed to support and develop community coaches across the game.

The launch event was attended by Leeds Rhinos Golden Generation player Danny McGuire, now Rugby League Impact and Growth Manager of the Foundation. Danny spoke about the development of the programme and the importance of upskilling coaches at all levels. Highlighting how better coaches create better players, which in turn increases participation and retention within the sport. Improving coaching standards also helps to create positive, supportive environments where players can truly thrive.

What makes this programme unique is the level of support available to coaches. While Danny McGuire’s involvement is a key feature, participants will also benefit from the expertise of the Leeds Rhinos Foundation Coaching Performance Team, who will be actively involved in delivering workshops. Coaches will also have access to observe Academy and Scholarship sessions, with opportunities to link closely with Mark Butterill, Leeds Rhinos Head of Pathways and Talent ID.

Also in attendance was Darren Higgins, Leeds Rhinos Head of Youth, who spoke about the return of structured coaching pathway opportunities after a long absence. Darren noted how the programme directly links coach development with player progression, sharing examples of players who have advanced into Scholarship and Academy programmes thanks to the support and dedication of community coaches.

Leeds Rhinos Foundation Rugby League Development Officer Craig Shepherd delivered a detailed presentation outlining the full programme. This includes seven exclusive workshops, access to high-level coaching sessions, and valuable one-to-one support for coaches throughout the programme.

Rugby League Development Plan Manager Sam Horner also addressed attendees, praising the outstanding work carried out by community coaches within their clubs. He emphasised why support of this nature is vital for the continued growth of the game and reflected on the strong history of collaboration between the Leeds Rhinos Performance Team and the community game. Sam emphasised that this ongoing support will play a key role in developing both coaches and players for the long-term benefit of rugby league.
