Huge win for Leeds Rhinos Wheelchair over Hull FC

After disappointment in Halifax last week, Leeds Rhinos Wheelchair got back to winning ways on Sunday with a stunning 114-24 victory over Hull FC at Leeds Beckett University Sports Arena.

This was a real stylish team performance with the Coach, James Simpson, determined to enure that all the players in the squad received fair time on the pitch.

There were scores right across the team for a well-drilled Leeds side, who played the ball through hands with great fluidity that caught out the Hull defence on several occasions.

Ewan Clibbens’ great defending and attacking runs rewarded him with four tries and one goal. Space was created for Jodie Boyd-Ward to repeatedly score on the wing, and bank herself 5 tries in total with an outstanding performance. Tom Halliwell’s turn of pace and dummy throws gave him a well-deserved hat-trick, whilst the biggest achievement of the day went to Paul Horrobin, who also earnt himself his first career hat-trick with a solid performance.

Verity Smith’s improving game showed with great defence to take the tackle preventing Hull from scoring in the corner on numerous occasions. Meanwhile, Player of the Match Nathan Collins showed immense skill with a couple of successful chip and chase tries, great speed and agility in evading defenders to give him the top scorer prize this weekend with 42 points (6 tries and 9 conversions).

Despite being such a one-sided affair, credit must go to visitors Hull FC who displayed a ‘never-give-up’ attitude and were rewarded with two late tries for their endeavors.

Speaking after the game, a satisfied James Simpson said: “We love playing here at Leeds Beckett and it’s starting to become a bit of a fortress for us. It was a really good performance after we worked on a lot of things during the week where we kind of pinpointed exactly what we needed to go out and nail, and most of our tries came from what we’d worked on in the week so that was really pleasing to see.

“It gave us a great opportunity to get some of our fringe players on as well, and I thought they all performed superbly. We had Paul and Vez on who got some really good minutes and it was really nice to have them involved as they haven’t featured as much recently.

“That’s what I love about this game is that you get people from all sorts of backgrounds and abilities, and Paul is one of the older players who has only been playing for two years but he’s really taken to the sport and he loves it. We’re trying to just get the best out of him and help him as much as we can to improve, so to see him score a hat-trick today was amazing and that’s something he’ll probably remember for a long time.”
