Healthy Rhinos Week – Try Club

Try Club has been running since 2016

At Friday’s Leeds Rhinos’ game against Widnes we are joining forces with our partners from across the city for a health takeover night at Emerald Headingley as part of our Healthy Rhinos Week.

Throughout Healthy Rhinos Week we will focus on our many health projects which are aiming to inspire people to enjoy healthy, happy and active lifestyles.  Next up we look at our Try Club men’s health programme, which is run in partnership with Leeds Public Health.

The aim of Try Club is to help as men be successful in achieving their health and weight management goals. On completion of the 12-week course the aim is for every participant to be educated, motivated and committed to getting healthy and staying fit.

The programme consists of:

  • 1 and a half hours of delivery per week split 50/50 between classroom and pitch
  • A weekly focus on a specific aspect of nutrition or behaviour change
  • Full body exercise sessions and team games
  • Free resources and support from trained Leeds Rhinos Foundation Staff throughout

Since Try Club was launched over three years ago there have been a number of success stories with many continuing to lead healthy lifestyles after graduating from the course and this year a group of Try Clubbers went onto complete the Leeds 10k!

As well as weight loss, many attendees have reported extended health benefits.  Try Club member, Eddy Toronczak, said the course has transformed his fitness. “I’m a type 2 diabetic and my nurse at my last health check was really impressed with my progress. I have seen my weight, blood sugar level, cholesterol and blood pressure drop.  She said, and I fully agree, that the programme is much better than medication, I would recommend all men to take up the offer.

"I’ve learnt it’s important to set individual targets in relationship to your weight, a lot of people expect too much and set themselves up to fail. The leaders, Laura and Adam, are a credit to the Foundation in the way the group is presented.  Laura motivates us all in her enlightening nutrition presentations about food choices and Adam motivates you as an individual to be the best you can be and improve your weekly targets."

The course is free and is for males aged 18 years or above with a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or above. Click this link http://www.nhs.uk/Tools/Pages/Healthyweightcalculator.aspx for details
