Girls Carnegie Champion School Qualifiers

Thursday saw an active afternoon on Abbey Fields 4 year 7 girls teams and 8 year 8 girls teams took part in the Leeds Local stage of the Carnegie Champion School Qualifiers. Carnegie Champion schools is a national schools Rugby League competition.

It was no surprise that within minutes of KO’s there were tries being scored but not only great attacking ability but some strong defence work too.

The year 8’s ended in a final between Royds and Cockburn at full time the score was 3 tries a piece but in extra time Cockburn finished champions with the final result 5-4.

Sian Hills Women and girls development officer commented: “It was fantastic to see so many girls playing rugby in one afternoon. The standard has improved no ends and I wish the best of luck to those schools that have progressed onto the regional stages of the competition”.

Great efforts from all those involved and a huge thank you to the Leeds Rhinos academy players; Jordan Bulwinson, Jake Normanton, Jamel Chisholm, Jose Kenga for refereeing the games.

The following teams competed: Yr 7 Settle Middle, Corpus Christi and Mount St Mary, Year 8: Boston Spa, Royds, Bruntcliffe, Rodillian, Corpus Christi, Settle Middle, Roundhay and Cockburn.

Congratulations to Year 7 Corpus Christi and Mount St Mary’s and year 8 Cockburn and Royds who have all progressed onto the Regional stages of the Carnegie Champion Schools competition.
