Yesterday marked the first Leeds Rugby Foundation Girl’s full contact Rugby League Festival of the 2013/14 school year at Oulton Raiders ARLFC.
The festival welcomed teams not only from Leeds, but York too. Bruntcliffe High School, Morley Academy, Temple Moor High School, Corpus Christi and York outfit Huntington School all turned out for a fantastic day.
The round-robin tournament eventually saw the unbeaten Huntington through to the final to play Corpus Christi who narrowly piped Bruntcliffe to the final showdown.
The final was a tight affair with both teams battling hard and at the end of the allotted time finishing one try a piece, so the game went in to golden point. Corpus Christi took possession early into golden point stayed composed and managed to edge their way over Huntington’s line with captain Nyasha Maponga scoring the winning try!
Two star player awards given for performance and attitude at the festival were Temple Moors, Chutikarn Boonworametee and Bruntcliffe’s, Emily Parkinson.
Lois Forsell, Leeds Rugby Foundation South Leeds Development Officer commented: “The girls all showcased excellent skill and athleticism throughout even though the format made it a physical and tiring endeavour for the girls often playing three games on the bounce.”
A massive thank you must go to Oulton Raiders and all the volunteer referee’s. A reminder that Oulton Girls train Tuesdays 5.30-6.30 and welcome girls 11-16 years old of all abilities.
