The 2014/15 Champion Schools Rugby League tournament kicked off with the Year 10 boy’s festival at the Hunslet Warriors club. High Schools from across the City competed in a number of exciting matches with the aim of qualifying for the regional stages of the RFL’s National competition.
Congratulations and good luck to the 4 qualifying schools Woodkirk (pictured), Leeds West Academy, Royds and Mount St Marys, who will now go on to represent Leeds in next rounds of the competition. The qualifiers more than earned their places after winning through a highly competitive and entertaining festival that was a credit to the boys and their schools.
Group 1 was dominated by Woodkirk, who secured a semi-final spot without conceding a try. Royds narrowly overcome a good Brigshaw team and a spirited outfit from Temple Moor to claim a qualifying spot.
Group 2 served up some evenly matched games and nail biting finishes, including table toppers Leeds West Academy’s last gasp winner against Morley. With very little to choose between the teams, Mount St Marys draw against Crawshaw proved decisive in them progressing from their group and ultimately securing the last qualifying place.
Woodkirks Year 10s, playing some expansive Rugby were deservedly crowned Champions, beating a promising Leeds West Academy team in the Final.
