Carr Manor Community College BTEC sport students host RLWC festival for 10 Primary Schools’

Carr Manor Community College Year 10 BTEC sport students recently hosted a Rugby League World Cup (RLWC) themed festival for ten Year 6 Primary School teams.

Prior to this successful festival, Leeds Rugby Foundation Community Development Officer Adam Lunn educated the Year 10 BTEC students for 4 weeks before he then coached the local school's who all came together for the festival hosted by the students themselves.

This was yet another example of  LRF developing Rugby League in the city.

Festival report by Adam Lunn:

During the festival, each school were allocated a county who are currently competing in this year’s headline event. The festival had fantastic tag rugby skills on show and some real potential for student’s moving up into High School Rugby League for next year was shown.

The first part of the festival involved the BTEC Sport group coaching a range of skills to the primary school pupils such as Play the Ball, Passing, Kicking and Evasion. This was followed by the same group hosting, managing, running, refereeing, score and time keeping the whole RLWC style festival to form part of their BTEC Leadership module marking criteria.

The ten teams were made up from five primary schools included Chapel Allerton A & B representing New Zealand, who got off to a flying start with wins over rival’s Australia (Milfield A & B).

Bankside A & B got off to slow start, but kept their determination high just as their England representatives will have to do.

Little London A & B supporting Scotland won their opening games and finally Meanwood CE who even started the festival in the same Samoan tradition with a Haka.

Adam Lunn, commented: “It is fantastic to see such enthusiasm around our game and witness the interaction between the year 10 and 6 students who all on the day performed with professionalism, respect and enjoyment.”
