Leeds Rhinos Foundation is delighted to announce that training sessions for the Leeds Rhinos Learning Disability Super League (LDSL) team will finally return next week after a prolonged absence of 18 months during the coronavirus pandemic.
The side are looking forward to finally returning to action and will be joining the Community Integrated Care Learning Disability Super League for the 2021 season, with the variation of the sport allowing people with learning disabilities to enjoy the game of Rugby League.
Learning Disability Rugby League (LDRL) provides the opportunity for individuals to play rugby league, take part in games and festivals against other Super League clubs, meet new people and most importantly have fun and make new friends.
In 2019, our players enjoyed some unforgettable experiences including a training session with Rhinos legend Jamie Jones-Buchanan, playing on the pitch at Liverpool’s iconic Anfield Stadium during Magic Weekend and taking part in the RFL’s Grand Day Out festival in Blackpool.
Our LDSL activity is part of a wider strategic partnership between Community Integrated Care, the Betfred Super League and the RFL, which aims to develop and enhance the community programmes provided by the sport to people with care and support needs.
Emphasis in LDSL is on inclusion and enjoyment. It was conceived to provide a team-sport experience to those who would previously would not have had such an opportunity.
All LDSL matches are played on small-sized pitches and the games are non-contact and follow Tag Rugby League rules.
The Leeds Rhinos LDSL team is entirely inclusive and welcomes all players, regardless of skill or experience. Training sessions take place every Friday at Leeds Rugby Academy in Kirkstall from 3-4pm and new players are welcome to join us, but must have registered to play first.
