West Leeds ARLFC hosted the qualifying rounds of the Leeds city tag tournament for the Leeds West Sports Partnership on Thursday with staff from the Leeds Rhinos Foundation working alongside School Games Organiser Charlie Pyatt and SSCO Andy Sutton to deliver the tournament in which 11 school in action.
The Year 5 and 6 pupils from 11 schools in the Leeds West schools partnership played out the afternoon tournament which was the latest round in the series of Leeds regional qualifying festivals allowing teams to progress to the city wide tag tournament finals based at the John Charles Centre for Sport in May.
All the schools showed great enthusiasm and the children displayed some fantastic skills throughout the day through a league format before the top teams progressed to a play-off situation in which Castleton Primary School and Raynville Primary School eventually came out on top to make make the final.
The final match between the two schools proved to be a close affair with little to separate them, going into extra time with Raynville becoming overall winners on the day with a 3 tries to 2 victory. Both teams however, will now play in the City Wide Tag Tournament Final representing West Leeds.
Leeds Rhinos Community Manager; Jonny Wainhouse commented
"The partnerships we have with School Games Organisers, schools in general and community clubs are crucial for the development of the rugby league. That was evident today with 11 local schools attending this event at West Leeds Eagles which will hopefully encourage more children to play the game.
"We would like to say a massive thank you to the teachers who brought the children, West Leeds Eagles for hosting the event and one last thank you to Andy Sutton who went out of his way to engage as many schools as possible into this event."
