Try Club graduates to March for Men this Father’s Day in support of Prostate Cancer

Graduates from Leeds Rhinos Foundation's Try Club will line up with thousands of other men

As people across the country come together this week in support of national Men’s Health Week, graduates from Leeds Rhinos Foundation’s Try Club will line up with thousands of other men, women and children in support of Prostate Cancer UK at the Leeds March for Men this Sunday

Nine members of Leeds Rhinos Foundation’s healthy lifestyles service will be taking on 2, 8 and 16k routes around Leeds’ Roundhay Park on Father’s Day, all to help stop prostate cancer being a killer by raising awareness and fundraising for Prostate Cancer UK.

Having completed 12 weeks of Leeds Rhinos Foundation’s Try Club programme in 2017, the members have continued links with the charity to help maintain their fitness goals, with many taking part in the programme’s own weekly Touch and Pass sessions and members also signing up for the Asda Foundation Leeds 10k in July.

The most common cancer in men in the UK, one in eight men get diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point in their lives, mainly affecting men over 50. Prostate Cancer UK established in 1996 have invested over £37 million into ground breaking research over the last 20 years and continue to provide award-winning support for men.

The March for Men campaign, which takes place in Glasgow, London and Leeds, has played a big part in raising awareness of the charity’s quest for better diagnosis, better treatment and better support for people suffering with Prostate Cancer and has once again received support from a number of celebrities including Broadcaster Jeff Stelling who today completed his 15 marathons in 15 days challenge as well as Leeds Rhinos legend Kevin Sinfield MBE.

63-year-old Try Club member Robert Phillis, commented on supporting the cause:

“I’m very pleased to be able to join some of the other men from Try Club for this great cause.

“Although there is a range of ages in the groups, many of us are over 50 and in the increased risk category for prostate cancer, so raising awareness of this charity that does so much to support people living with the disease and improves people’s chances of diagnosing it early is very important," he added.

“Through working with Laura and Adam from the Leeds Rhinos Foundation on the Try Club programme over the 12 weeks, we’ve all improved our health and physical fitness, so we are certainly much better placed to take on this walk on Sunday, so I’m looking forward to being part of the day.”

Speaking on behalf of Leeds Rhinos Foundation, Healthy Improvement Officer Laura Buckle said:

“It’s fantastic that several of the guys from our Try Club have put their hand up to support one of the most common cancers for men in the UK this weekend.

“One of the goals of Try Club was to support our graduates to maintain their healthy lifestyle changes and encourage continued participation in physical activity after they have finished the 12 weeks and this walk among other things is a great example of that legacy.”

Leeds Rhinos Foundation have two Try Club Men's Health programmes starting this June with a Wednesday programme at Headingley Carnegie Stadium and Monday night at West Leeds ARLFC Sports and Social Club.

The programme is FREE and provides honest and realistic advice on healthy weight loss, exercise and setting those all important health goals.

Try Club is for men aged over 25, with a BMI over 25.
