England Wheelchair Head Coach Tom Coyd MBE has named his 12-man World Cup Train-On Squad ahead of this year’s Rugby League World Cup in Australia at the end of the season.
This weekend (11/12 July) the National Performance Squad (NPS) will meet at the University of Nottingham before the official World Cup Squad is named later in the year.
The selection comprises three players from Halifax Panthers (Jack Brown, Rob Hawkins, Finlay O’Neill), Leeds Rhinos (Josh Butler, Nathan Collins, Tristan Norfolk) and London Roosters (Mason Billington, Joe Coyd, Lewis King), the three sides currently sitting top of the Betfred Wheelchair Super League.
Also selected are Luis Domingos and Chris Haynes from Sheffield Eagles, and Josh Edwards from Hull FC who is the only player included who is yet to make his international debut.
The squad have also recently formed a partnership with Vulcan, part of RMA Sport, who will provide custom fit wheelchairs for the squad as they head down under.
The company initially began working with the RFL in 2019 when they developed a club level Rugby League chair for the sport – the first of its kind.
This model is formed of a lightweight aluminium frame with quick release sports wheels and is sold across the UK to various clubs after being devised to support the “Created By” initiative for the 2021 RLWC legacy fund.
In early 2025, the company used their unique Contour Body Mapping technology to create a made to measure chair for England Wheelchair Captain Lewis King with the entire squad now fitted with their own bespoke chairs.
The squad have begun testing and measuring these chairs at their designated England training camps since April to fine tune each chair and acclimate to them ahead of the World Cup.
England Wheelchair Head Coach Tom Coyd MBE said: “We have selected a group of players who are in excellent form and competing at the highest level on a weekly basis in the Super League and at our training camps.
“They are a fantastic fit for the way we want to play and, between them, bring a range of skills and strengths that we believe can combine into an exciting and relentless team.
“This squad has also made a real commitment to investing in their relationships with one another, which will be vital as we continue to build our togetherness towards the World Cup.
“I also want to acknowledge Jordan Holt, Jason Owen, Stephen Reilly and Joe Wink-Simmonds. While they have missed out on selection at this stage, their contributions to our preparation have been significant, and their development will continue to be supported in partnership with their clubs.
“We are also grateful for our partnership with Vulcan, who are supplying the players with bespoke, state-of-the-art wheelchairs. The level of service they have provided has been outstanding and their support is hugely important, as it will help ensure each player has the equipment they need to perform at their very best.
“As we meet in Nottingham this weekend for our fifth camp of the year, we will continue to refine our game, build our combinations, and deepen our connections.”
