Schools enjoy matchday benefits in record numbers during 2017 season

The Rhinos Takeover initiative offers children the chance to experience a live Super League match with a field parade around the pitch in front of a packed Headingly Carnegie stadium

Leeds Rhinos Foundation have invited over 1400 pupils to Headingley Carnegie Stadium to enjoy a matchday experience as part of the club’s ambassador scheme this season

Over 97 total primary and secondary schools from Leeds along with invited schools from outside the city have benefited from a matchday experience, taking advantage of discounted tickets as part of the scheme, which also sees pupils involved in a Rhinos home game fixture in a unique, exciting and rewarding way.

As part of the community atmosphere at Headingley Carnegie Stadium on match nights and to provide school children with the memorable experience of gracing the famous Headingley pitch, schools attending the game are given Guard of Honour and Flag Bearer duties to welcome teams on the pitch.

Nearly 830 pupils have taken part in these ceremonies from 37 schools alongside a further groundswell of pupils from schools who have received one of the Leeds Rhinos Foundation’s most popular school offers, the Rhinos Takeover Day.

Through the regular season, 60 more schools have enjoyed the Rhinos Takeover experience sponsored by Caddick Construction and Cover Structure Ltd, which provides a tailored school activity bundle including dance, rugby and multi-skills sessions with themed educational assemblies.

The initiative also offers children the chance to experience a live Super League match for the reduced price of £5 for a child and £5 for one additional adult and the chance for children to cap off their takeover day with a field parade around the pitch in front of a packed Headingley Carnegie stadium.

Although mainly involving schools from Leeds and the surrounding areas, the offer of being included in a matchday experience has also been extended to schools who are visiting Yorkshire on school visits, which this year included a school from the Isle of Man.

Speaking about their visit, Head of PE at Queen Elizabeth School on the Isle of Man, Dominic Winrow said:

“I have recently brought a school group over to Leeds and we paid a visit to Headingley to watch Leeds Rhinos vs Wakefield Trinity Wildcats on a Friday night. I just wanted to say a big thank you to everybody at the club and to say what a wonderful experience both our pupils and staff had at the club.

“It is without a doubt the best experience that I have ever had with any professional sports team and it has gone a long way in making sure all of our students had a fantastic tour.”
