Leeds Rhinos Foundation has launched a new project to tackle social isolation and engage the older community in activities to improve their physical, mental and social well-being.
Every Tuesday the charity runs the Rhinos Active Social group at Headingley Carnegie Stadium for people aged over 60. Attendees are invited to enjoy a range of activities that help them to stay active while interacting with people of a similar age.
The two hour sessions offer activities such as yoga, tai chi and chair based exercise for those wanting to keep fit as well as a friendly, casual atmosphere for attendees who simply want to enjoy socialising.
The programme is an expansion of the health initiatives already offered by Leeds Rhinos Foundation and is delivered by the charity’s health improvement officer, Stephen Turrell.
“Back in February we ran a six week course for over 60s with Age UK,” explained Turrell. “The feedback from this was extremely positive and we recognised a need for a continued provision throughout the year.
"The content of the programme is driven by those who come along. It is a group for them and it is important that they have a say in what is involved and alongside the physical exercise we have had talks on nutrition, the history of Leeds as well as race nights. Most attendees come on their own and have said it has helped them reengage with their community and make new friends.
“As well as maintaining physical health, social interaction helps maintain good mental health and we hope this project will help those in the community who may feel socially isolated and offer them somewhere they can go where to enjoy the company of others, doing activities that they want to do.”
Sessions run Tuesday 10:30am-12:30pm and cost £2 per week. For more information contact stephen.turrell@leedsrhinosfoundation.org or 07710094019.
