Leeds Rhinos stars Brad Singleton and Jordan Baldwinson passed on some health and fitness advice to members of Leeds Rhinos Foundation’s Try Club Men’s Health Management programme last week as the group discussed goal setting, dieting and motivation.
Try Club now runs as a daytime and evening programme for the first time in 2017, following the demand for the course. The Wednesday evening group, comprising over 18 members, received a boost in their second week with a special appearance from the two Rhinos stars, who passed on advice to help the group achieve their weight loss and fitness goals.
Speaking about the night Singleton said: “It’s nice to see the blokes coming along and wanting to start their journey to a healthier life. The effort is there just by them turning up and listening and they are obviously lapping people on the sofa so it’s just good to see.”
The sessions focus on healthier eating and physical activity, splitting programme delivery between educational classroom learning and physical activity. With a focus on realistic goal setting, nutrition and other health related topics, the week by week approach to improving health and weight management helps service users achieve maintainable lifestyle changes.
“I think the positives from exercise outweigh the negatives 100% and the endorphins it gives you, so people who don’t know about the benefits of this course should come and find out,” added Singleton.
Try Club, which is supported by Leeds City Council and Leeds Public Health, also encourages members to continue their healthy lifestyles by signposting members to some of the many programmes and events hosted by Leeds Rhinos Foundation throughout the year, with members last year attending weekly Touch Rugby sessions and a group tackling the Leeds 10k event last July.
Following the Q&A Baldwinson and Singleton provided some encouragement for the group as they took part in their weekly fitness circuits with course leaders Adam Lunn and Laura Buckle.
Singleton spoke highly of the appeal of the programme led by the club’s official charity he supports throughout the season.
“The Leeds Rhinos Foundation staff deserve massive credit and the lads turning up as well,” he said. “There are a lot of people out there that complain about their weight but don’t do anything about it, down here they can join up meet new friends, do some team activities.”
Jordan Baldwinson added:
“If you are thinking about it but you are not too sure or you’re not high on confidence, this is the perfect place to come down, try it out and if you don’t like it and it’s not for you then fair enough but the guys down here seem to be really enjoying it and you have the Rhinos’ players coming in and passing on advice and tips, so it’s a really positive programme and it’s going to help you adopt a healthier and active lifestyle.”
Leeds Rhinos Foundation are currently registering people for the next programmes due to start at the beginning of April.
