Platform service provides valuable lessons for TryZone students

TryZone are the Leeds Rhinos Foundation's Education Project based at Headingley Carnegie Stadium

The Leeds Rhinos Foundation’s education project TryZone has this month been working in partnership with Leeds-based drug advice and support service ‘Platform’, to inform students on the misuse of drugs and alcohol

Staff from Platform worked with Key Stage 3 pupils in sessions based at the purpose built education centre at Headingley Carnegie Centre, as part of the ‘Resilience and Determination’ (RAD) course ran by TryZone throughout the year.

The young people’s support service, who are located in Armley, provided information sessions with the TryZone students focussing on both awareness of alcohol misuse and the misuse of cannabis and legal highs in two interactive sessions.

TryZone, who are funded by the big lottery, offer the RAD course to involve pupils in increasing their knowledge of keeping healthy and to assist them in making positive choices and working with the young people’s service has allowed them to benefit from the expert knowledge of the platform staff over the past fortnight.

One pupil from TryZone commented:

“It was really fun doing the practical stuff in the session and interesting learning about what happens to you when you are drunk.”

Platform is the Leeds Specialist Young People’s Drug and Alcohol service working with young people up to the age of 18 in a private and confidential capacity in partnership Barca-Leeds and the charity DISC (Developing Initiatives, Supporting Communities).
