Outer East Community Camps prove huge success

Outer East Camp at Garforth Academy

Leeds Rhinos Foundation in partnership with Leeds City Council and the Leeds Outer East Community Committee have provided multi-sports activity camps for over 440 children aged 7-14 during the Summer holidays.

The camps offered to local schools in the East of the city and running for four days, offered rugby, dance and a range of sports all delivered by Leeds Rhinos Foundation coaching staff.

Taking place at Garforth Academy, Temple Moor High School, Manston St James and Brigshaw High School, the camps cost just £5 thanks to funding from the committee, who subsidised places for children in the area.

Councillor Stuart McKenna, who oversees the Swillington and Garforth Ward said it’s been great start to the partnership with Leeds Rhinos Foundation:

“It’s a great partnership, these camps are not just providing a few hours a day but four days of good experience with good coaching,” said McKenna.

“The camps are offering more than what people would expect. As it’s the Leeds Rhinos Foundation, people might just think it’s just rugby but it’s far more than that, its multi-sports and dance and the kids are really enjoying it and that’s what it’s all about,” he added.

“This year we have delved into the Leeds Rhinos Foundation offering for multi-sports delivery and I believe Garforth and our other areas have sold out, it’s been over 440 kids over the four weeks, so I think it’s something we would definitely look to doing in the future.”

Community Manager for the Leeds Rhinos Foundation Gareth Cook added:

“We’ve been at Kippax, Garforth, Temple Newsam and Crossgates and we are also doing some pilot camps in the Inner East Communities as well but hopefully we would love to have a Leeds Rhinos Foundation camp in every ward across Leeds.”
