Leeds Rhinos Foundation have bolstered their primary school delivery in the city with the hiring of new Schools Partnership Officer Gavyn Lighthowler starting on Monday 18th April.
Gavyn, who has previous experience working in the community environment at Wakefield Trinity Wildcats Trust, will service ten schools in the East Leeds area, joining four other Leeds Rhinos Foundation Schools Partnership Officers currently servicing schools across Leeds.
Through the charity's school sports offer, 47 primary and high schools now commit sport premium funds to the Leeds Rhinos Foundation in exchange for a dedicated School's Partnership Officer who delivers high quality Physical Education throughout the school year.
Committing 70 hours of contact time as a dedicated sports officer, Gavyn will deliver a programme that will enhance and develop Physical Education in schools with a varied menu of activity that allows children to experience different sports and learn new skills as part of their sports curriculum.
Having played rugby at amateur level for his local clubs Knottingley Rockware and Castleford Lock Lane and worked for Wakefield Trinity Wildcats as rugby league development officer from 2008-2012, Gavyn also brings a vast amount of experience in offering support and guidance for pupils in their transition from participating in sport at school onto playing for local Community Clubs or other Activity Clubs.
Gavyn, who has also worked in the school environment for the last 4 years as a sports coach at Sandall Castle Primary in Wakefield, commented on his new role:
"I am really looking forward to working at a great club like Leeds Rhinos that is steeped in history. I feel that working for the Foundation is the next step in my career that will open up further opportunities in years to come'
Community Manager Gareth Cook added:
"We are delighted to welcome Gavyn to our team, he brings a wealth of experience having worked in the community environment at Wakefield Wildcats.
"The partner school model in Leeds is going from strength to strength and Gavyn will play a key role in shaping physical activity across schools in Leeds"
Gavyn, who starts on Monday 18th April with the Foundation will be replacing long term staff member Emma Davis, who is taking up a career in the school system in York. The Leeds Rhinos Foundation would like to thank Emma for her services to the charity and wish her the best for the future.
