The Leeds Rhinos Foundation joined a host of other sporting organisations across the county to run a dance and rugby league coaching station at the recent Leeds Active Schools Key Stage One participation festival at John Charles Centre for Sport

The festival brought in around 70 schools for the morning and afternoon sessions and over 700 children to the home of the Hunslet Hawks, for the event organised by the Leeds School Sports Partnership and Leeds Active Schools.

Leeds Rhinos Foundation Dance Development Officer Nicola Booth and Projects Officer Adam Lunn were on hand during the day to take school groups though some coaching sessions, as an example of some of the appropriate activities for Key Stage 1 children on offer as part of the Leeds Active School programme.

The Leeds Rhinos staff were joined by staff from other schools sports partners with Leeds United Foundation and Yorkshire Cricket Foundation and other groups such as British orienteering and cycling present all providing activities for the schools at the event.

Charlie Pyatt, from the Leeds school sport partnership explained the importance of the event for the key stage 1 age groups:

“The development that has been happening over the last few years is to move down our offer to a younger age group, so the KS1 children are getting opportunities to come out and learn multi skills across a range of different activities to start them out on their sporting journeys and hopefully to encourage them to take up fit and healthy lifestyles from receiving good quality physical education in their schools from a young age.

“It is very much appreciated the Leeds Rhinos Foundation have provided us with the challenge cup today, providing that inspiration for the children and to remind them of the excellent role models that we get from the players we see on the pitch with the first team but also the local identity we have with the Leeds Rhinos as excellent role models, as we have several schools here today that some of the players went to as children, so the children here today can really relate to that.”
