Leeds Rhinos Foundation help kick start new junior set up at LS27 Spartans

Leeds Rhinos Foundation South Area Rugby League Development Officer Richard Tate lead the session with help from Former Rhinos Prop Nick Scruton

Leeds Rhinos Foundation in partnership with Sky Try helped put Rugby League back on the map in the town of Morley by supporting the launch of new club LS27 Spartans.

As part of the launch, which also included a supporter branch event organised by the Leeds Rhinos, staff from the Leeds Rhinos Foundation ran a Rugby League taster session sponsored by Sky Try to help recruit the first generation of players at the club in the under 7s age group, with 50 new players in attendance.

The taster sessions are offered as part of the Leeds Rhinos Foundation’s Rugby League Development Plan sponsored by Mears, which are designed to increase participation in the sport, alongside offering all school children in the city, the opportunity to play and participate in Rugby League.

With support from the Leeds Rhinos Foundation, who also helped with the recruitment drive by delivering sessions to year 1 and 2 pupils in local school Churwell Primary, the launch event proved to be a huge success involving over 100 juniors throughout the night.

Alongside the 50 players attending the under 7s taster session, junior fans in the area as part of the LS27 supporters branch family event were able to enjoy a skill session delivered by the Leeds Rhinos Foundation and a strength and conditioning circuit delivered by Morley’s own Joe G’s fitness centre.

Former Leeds Rhinos prop Nick Scruton, who grew up in the area playing with now defunct club Churwell Chiefs, was also on hand to deliver some expert tips and advice to all junior rugby league fans.

Since their inception into the Ambassador Scheme, alongside 35 other Rugby League community clubs across the city, LS27 Spartans have been making preparations to their new base at Morley Cricket and Sports Club, and now officially launched will now look to recruit coaches and volunteers to take the club forward.

Going forward LS27 Spartans will now continue to develop their new under 7s age group, before officially entering the team into competitive rugby in 2017 and continue to benefit from being part of the Club Ambassador Scheme including coach education workshops, rugby events, match day experiences at Leeds Rhinos games, rewards to raise funds, cashback on Rhinos season memberships, player appearances and further support with growing their player base at all age groups.

The Spartans new under 7s team will train on Tuesday night from 5:30pm to 6:30pm from their pitches at Spartan Park (Morley Cricket and Sports Club). All under 7s players are welcome.
