The Leeds Rhinos Foundation is providing 16 coaches from community clubs across Leeds the chance to undertake their level 1 Rugby League coaching qualification this month at Leeds Sports Centre as part of the charity’s Rugby League Development Plan sponsored by Mears.
The qualification is being delivered by RFL assessors from the Leeds Rhinos Foundation Leon Crick and Martin Crick and Sam Horner, who will assess and deliver to the coaches over a four week period, culminating in the group receiving their official level one coaching qualifications.
The qualification is seen as the first rung on the ladder of coaching and is designed for anyone over 16 years of age, looking for an introduction to working with groups of children and junior rugby league teams, or for parents of children in junior rugby league teams who want to get more involved in coaching.
The course prepares coaches new to the game or with limited coaching experience on how to plan and deliver effective rugby league coaching sessions from session cards, how to review personal coaching performance, seek further development opportunities and demonstrate proper safety and ethics when coaching rugby league.
The course, taking place at Leeds Sports Centre, is running on a Monday evening to allow the community club coaches the freedom to continue their coaching on weekends, breaking away from the usual format of being split over two full days on weekends.
Sam Horner commented on the course:
“The level one course is ideal for anyone who wants to receive an introduction into coaching Rugby League and it’s great to be able to upskill more coaches from the community with this qualification, many of which are working with some of our youngest age groups, where getting the coaching environment right is really important to keeping kids in the game.
"Developing more coaches plays a big part in our Rugby League Development plan across the city as it’s our community coaches who are developing the next generation of players. We have 16 coaches currently working through the course and we hope to work with some more coaches in the New Year.”
The Leeds Rhinos Foundation will be running another level one coaching course in January, for more details on the course, pricing and dates contact Sam.Horner@leedsrugby.com
